Sing Me A Song!

Saturday, November 4, 2017 • 7:30 pm
Sunday, November 5, 2017 • 3:00 pm

First Congregational Church, UCC
2503 Main Street
La Crosse, Wisconsin

Sponsored by the Dr. David L. and Sacia B. Morris Fund of the La Crosse Community Foundation

Our November concert will transport you to a medieval masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Paris as we sing
Eric Whitacre’s evocative “Sainte-Chapelle,” in which the “many-coloured light” pouring through stained glass
windows entrances a young girl.  We’ll also sing music inspired by a vision of the 11th century mystic Hildegard
of Bingen in “Viriditas” by Joan Szymko.  We’ll bring you images of America in Colorado composer Cecil Effinger’s
Four Pastorales, accompanied by oboeist Mary Beth Hensel, and in settings of “When the Saints Go Marching
In” and “Tenting on the Old Camp Ground.”

Songs To Inspire

Saturday, February 10, 2018 • 7:30 pm       Sunday, February 11, 2018 • 3:00 pm

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church                                  Wesley United Methodist Church
21 North Hill Street                                                          721 King Street
La Crescent, Minnesota                                                   La Crosse, Wisconsin

Sponsored in loving memory of Theresa Kroes

In February’s concert you’ll experience the personal, the universal, the heartfelt, and the humorous in music.  In
another beautiful Joan Szymko piece, “Remembering,” accompanied by Mary Beth Hensel on oboe and Derek
Clark on cello, a “still small voice singing a song unchanged from the foundation of the world” reminds us of the
transcendent quality of music, and of our ability to hear the music in spite of the noise of everyday life.  You’ll
enjoy witty philosophy in Leonard Bernstein’s “The Best of All Possible Worlds,” from
Candide.  You’ll hear
tender emotion in Norman Dello Joio’s “Come to Me, My Love.”  And you’ll feel the fervent hope of Emma
Lazarus’s words “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” in Irving Berlin’s classic setting.  Pamela Preston Kelly will be
our featured pianist.

La Crosse, Wisconsin

Sponsored in honor of Paul Rusterholz

In April, the Mary of the Angels Chapel will be the perfect place to hear Leonard Bernstein’s brilliant Chichester
accompanied by harp, organ, and percussion, performed in honor of the centennial of his birth.  You’ll
also hear the local premieres of the joyous “Exsultate” by Brian Galante and “Gloria” for choir and organ by
Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.  We’ll say “Welcome Home” to tenor Matthew Curtis, who sang with the
Chorale in high school, and who has performed around the world with internationally recognized choral
ensembles such as Chanticleer.  Matt will be the featured guest artist in John Newton’s beloved hymn “Amazing
Grace,” as well as in pieces by Benjamin Britten and Felix Mendelssohn.

This concert is made possible by the generous hospitality of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.
